Why Manual Fire Extinguisher Inspections Create Risk

NFPA 10 requires every portable fire extinguisher to be inspected and documented every 30 days. In hospitals, campuses, and large facilities, that can mean thousands of repetitive inspections each month. Manual processes are labor-heavy, inconsistent, and easy to get wrong, especially across multiple buildings.

Wasted labor hours

Walking buildings, opening cabinets, checking gauges, and signing tags consumes skilled labor that could be spent on maintenance and repairs.

Compliance risks

Missing tags, illegible initials, or incomplete logs create preventable compliance issues during AHJ and accreditor surveys.

Late discovery of problems

Obstructed, relocated, or depressurized extinguishers are often found weeks after the issue occurs, not when it happens.

24/7 Monitoring

Continuous Compliance Without Wasted Time

Hexmodal smart fire extinguisher monitors automate the NFPA 10 monthly inspection process. Battery-powered sensors continuously verify extinguisher status and generate compliant inspection records automatically. Each inspection includes pressure status, weight verification, obstruction detection, tamper detection, and a photo of the gauge, all stored digitally.

No monthly walk-downs
Inspections run automatically without staff checking every extinguisher.
Immediate issue alerts
Obstructions, tampering, pressure loss, or relocation trigger alerts as they happen.
Survey-ready documentation
Monthly inspection reports are generated automatically in an AHJ-accepted format.

    FAQs

    Questions, answered with clarity.

Does Hexmodal replace the annual NFPA 10 inspection?

No. NFPA 10 still requires a licensed service provider to complete the annual inspection. Hexmodal automates the monthly inspection requirements by monitoring pressure, weight, tamper, and obstruction continuously.

Do we still need to walk around and check paper tags?

No. The system creates a validated monthly inspection log automatically. Each report includes timestamps, device IDs, and a photo of the gauge. There is no need to update paper tags manually.

What exactly does the sensor monitor?

The smart hook and obstruction sensor monitor pressure, weight, tampering, unauthorized movement, and obstruction. The system can alert the right staff member in real time and/or use a local sound alarm.

Will the sensors fit inside our existing extinguisher cabinets?

Yes. The device is designed to fit within standard cabinets and meets the ADA 5.5 inch protrusion requirement on wall mounts.

Do we need to modify our extinguishers?

No modifications are needed. Hexmodal works with standard portable extinguishers used in healthcare and commercial facilities.

Does this system require WiFi or our facility’s IT network?

No. Devices connect through Hexmodal’s low frequency and cellular network. There is no need for WiFi, Ethernet, or internal network access, which simplifies IT approvals.

    How are reports generated?

Monthly inspection reports are created automatically on the Hexmodal Dashboard. Each includes a gauge image, pressure status, weight, obstruction status, and corrective actions.

What happens if an extinguisher is moved or blocked?

You receive an alert by text, email, or phone. The system logs the event immediately, allowing staff to fix the issue long before the next monthly round.

    How long does installation take?

A maintenance technician can install the Fire Extinguisher in 5-10 minutes. No wiring or IT involvement are required.

    What about battery life?

Sensor batteries typically last 3 to 5 years, and Hexmodal provides replacement batteries at no cost. You will receive a replacement before the batteries expire.

How many devices can a single gateway support?

One gateway covers up to 250,000 square feet and supports more than 1,000 devices. To support larger facilities, Hexmodal provides gateways at no additional cost.

Do we pay extra for support?

No. All implementation assistance, 24/7 compliance support, spare parts, and recalibration are included in the subscription.
